The Kolatoy Play Lab is the team behind every guide on our blog. This page explains who we are, how we decide which toys to recommend, which sources we trust, and — just as importantly — what we do not do.
Who we are
The Kolatoy Play Lab is our in-house editorial team. We research and write the buying guides, age guides, and play articles you will find in our parenting blog, and we publish under a team byline rather than inventing individual expert personas.
To be precise about the name: the "Lab" in Play Lab refers to our editorial process, not to a physical testing laboratory. We are not pediatricians, occupational therapists, or product safety engineers. What we do is read the people who are — carefully, with sources cited — and translate their work into decisions a parent can actually make on a Tuesday night with a cart open.
How we choose: two axes, not a top-ten list
Most toy guides rank products. We map them instead, along two axes:
- Developmental stage — what a child of this age is actually working on right now, drawn from published milestones rather than from a box label.
- Learning goal — what a toy gives a child to practice: motor skills and hand-eye coordination, logic and problem solving, creativity and imagination, emotional intelligence and social play, or STEM and Montessori.
A toy that lands well on both axes earns a place in a guide. A toy that is merely popular does not.
Our three-step editorial review
Every toy category featured in our guides goes through the same three checks, in this order:
- Safety check. We verify the manufacturer's CPSC and ASTM F963 age grading, and we flag choking hazards for children under 3 — including the small-parts rule, loose parts that can come off under use, button batteries, and high-powered magnets. Safety is a filter, not a footnote: a toy that fails here does not appear in the guide, no matter how good the play value is.
- Developmental fit. We map each toy to published milestones and name the specific skill it gives a child to practice. Where the evidence is thin or contested, we say so in the article instead of rounding it up into a promise.
- Play-value screen. We prefer open-ended toys — the ones a child can use ten ways — over single-function toys that perform once and are done. This is the difference between a toy a child plays with and a toy a child watches.
The sources we rely on
We cite our sources in every guide, with publication dates, so you can check us. We hold ourselves to two source lists:
- For anything about child development: the American Academy of Pediatrics (including HealthyChildren.org), the CDC's developmental milestones, NAEYC, Zero to Three, the Montessori associations (AMI and AMS), and peer-reviewed research.
- For anything about safety: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the ASTM F963 toy safety standard.
When a study is small, preliminary, or widely over-interpreted, we tell you that in the article — even when the headline version would have been more persuasive. Parenting content is full of confident claims that the underlying research does not support, and we would rather be useful than dramatic.
What we do not do
This part matters as much as the rest, so we will be blunt:
- We sell the toys we feature. Kolatoy is a shop, and our guides link to our own collections. That is a commercial interest, and you should read our recommendations knowing it.
- We do not run independent lab tests — and we will never claim we do. We rely on manufacturers' certifications against CPSC and ASTM F963, and on the standards themselves. Any guide that tells you it "tested toys with 40 families for six months" should be able to show you the protocol; ours will not make that claim because we have not done it.
- We do not accept payment for placement or rankings, and we do not run affiliate links to other retailers.
- We do not give medical advice. Our guides are general information about play and toy selection. If you have a concern about your child's development, that conversation belongs with your pediatrician, not with a toy shop.
- We do not make claims we cannot back. If we have not seen a certificate, we do not describe a material as certified. If the research does not show an outcome, we do not promise it.
How we keep guides current
- Gift guides and seasonal roundups are reviewed and refreshed every year, in September and October, and the updated date is shown on the article.
- We keep the same web address when we update a guide rather than publishing a new one each year, so the version you bookmarked stays the version you get.
- Discontinued or out-of-stock products are removed from guides within 30 days.
- If we get something wrong, we correct it in place and say what changed.
